Verizon to Spend $100 Million on Sustainable Fuel
Verizon Communications, parent company of Verizon Wireless, today announced plans to invest $100 million in solar power and fuel cells. The alternate energy sources will be used at 19 different Verizon facilities in Arizona, California, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York. and North Carolina. The reason behind Verizon's decision is two-fold: First, it wants to reduce its carbon foorprint; and second, it wants to have back-up power supplies on hand to prevent network outages during events such as hurricanes. The fuel cells will rely on natural gas, which pollutes less when compared to the diesel generators used at a number of Verizon's facilities. Verizon expects the energy project to completed next year.
